Secretarial Times

Our secretary is in the office every day; however, there are times when we do not have secretarial time.  We do not have a secretary from 11:30am – 1:00 every day, and Tuesdays and Wednesdays are only half days.  If you call and no one answers, please leave a message on the answering machine.

*ALLERGY ALERTS*

Please note that Carson is a nut free school.  All school district schools are scent-free.

Food

At Carson Elementary we encourage students to bring healthy snacks and lunches. Please do not send pop to school. Water is a better choice. We are educating our students about nutrition and encouraging good health habits.  Students are given time by their classroom teachers before or after recess to have their snack and are encouraged to eat “fresh” or “growing” foods first.

Student Supervision Times

We do not have outside staff supervision of students prior to 8:05 am.  Parents are requested to ensure their children do not arrive prior to that time.  Doors are open at 8:05 a.m.

The following are supervision times:

8:05-8:20 am: Teaching staff

10:15 am-10:30 am: Recess - Teaching staff

12:02 pm-12:55 pm: Lunch Hour Student Supervisors

2:33 pm – 3:20 pm: Student Supervisor for late bus students only

Students may not leave the playground once they have arrived at school.  Students must stay at school over lunch unless prior arrangements have been made, and they have a written note.  They are expected to go directly home after school unless they have a note from their parents, verified by the classroom teacher and/or Principal.  Students who normally don’t ride the bus need to be registered through the Transportation Dept should they wish to go home with another student on the bus.

Code of Conduct

There is an expectation that Carson students will behave in ways that are kind and respectful.  This behaviour is expected while they are at school, are going to and from school, and while attending any school function at any location.  A school code of conduct is available in the office and is sent home with each student at the beginning of the year.

School Dress Code Policy and Footwear

Students are expected to come to school dressed to engage in classroom work and Physical Education.  The school district has a dress code policy and students and parents should make themselves familiar with this policy.  All school district policies can be found from the main webpage for the school district.

All students require two pairs of footwear: one for indoor use (running shoes) and one for outside use.  Students change to their inside shoes upon entering the school, which can be often if their main classroom is in one of our portables.  This change of footwear allows students to use the floors for projects and reading without concern about dirt, and reduces the possibility of accidents.  Our custodial time is limited and we all work together to keep a clean and safe learning environment.

During cold weather, please ensure that your child is dressed warmly with a hat, mitts, boots, etc.  It is very helpful to label all clothing.

Language Policy

Students are expected to use language that is respectful towards themselves and others during all parts of the day and in all areas of the school.

Cold Weather Policy

At Carson we believe that children need fresh air and outside play-time.  During cold or very inclement weather students remain inside.  If the thermometer at the school reads -15 or lower, it will probably be an “inside day”, but it may not.  If it is an inside day, students will be permitted to come into the school in the morning after 8:05 a.m. and at recess and at lunch if it is still too cold.  Students may be sent outside for a brief time to get some fresh air.  The -15 is a guideline and other factors such as wind chill will be considered.  Students should always come to school in clothing that will protect them from cold or poor weather conditions: although it may be a morning students stay inside, by lunch they may be able to go outside due to warmer temperatures.

Bicycles, Skateboards, & Scooters

For safety reasons students must walk their bikes upon entering the school blacktop/parking lot area.  The use of any “wheels” on school grounds is prohibited between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Students must wear a helmet if they are going to ride to school.  All wheeled items ridden to school must be locked up at one of our bicycle racks and not brought in or stored in the school.

Bus and/or Getting to and From School

Students are expected to follow school rules while on the bus and while walking to and from school.  There are consequences if students are unsafe or show unexpected behavior on the bus.

We Expect Respect and Kindness

Bullying and bystander behaviour is taken seriously at Carson Elementary, at any school event, or with any student from the school via the internet off school hours. This expectation is to enable all students to have a safe and caring environment to come to each day. All unkind or bullying matters are taken seriously.  We promote and talk about kindness and respect on a daily basis at our school.

Electronics

Personal use of cell phones, tablets, etc. are not permitted at school.  If a student does choose to bring these to school they must be stored safely and kept in their backpack for the duration of the day, with no student cell phones in use from 8:05 until the end of the school day.  In the event any of these items go missing the school will not be responsible for locating them.  If an electronic device is seen by any adult they will be taken away for the day.

Student Use of School Phones

Students may use classroom phones with permission from their classroom teacher. Students are expected to make after school arrangements (ie: play dates) at home.

Assemblies

We have an assembly on the morning of the first Monday of the month at 8:45 a.m.  These assemblies are an opportunity for staff and students to share news and announcements, to celebrate the previous month’s activities, and to introduce and discuss our Successful Learner Trait for the month.

Newsletters & Online Access

We do our best to create a newsletter monthly. The newsletter is posted on our website and on our Facebook page, and is available as a printout upon request.

School Planning and Student Support

As a school we work together to make school improvement plans.  We examine the needs of our students to make sure that we are meeting each child’s learning needs and that we are working towards continuous improvements in our school.  We make plans to help students improve academically and socially.  There are also supports and programs in place for our Indigenous students.  If you have any questions about these supports you can contact the office.

Student Support Services

At our school there is additional support for students who may be having difficulty.  This support is accessed through a referral to the School Based Team.  This referral may come from a teacher in consultation with the parents/guardians.

Parent Advisory Council (PAC)

There are many opportunities for parents to get involved at Carson Elementary School. As a school, we rely on parents to get involved and volunteer in whatever manner they are able. Let your talents be known!  Even if you have only a small amount of time, it is appreciated.  PAC Meetings are monthly at 6:30 p.m. in the library. Child minding is provided.
